I am stunned by the amount of time that has passed since I last opened up my laptop to jot down farm notes for our blog! As it turns out, starting up a farm AND being in the third trimester of pregnancy/welcoming a new baby to the family AND managing as a work-from-home mom AND settling into a new home doesn't leave a whole lot of space for many extracurriculars. Shocking, right?
Since I last posted updates about the farm, we have racked up TONS of first timer-style experience. The pigs came and went, a batch of meat chickens has successfully rotated through our young orchard, and we have added loads of experience arranging and selling our own specialty cut flowers to friends, family, and community members. Much to our good fortune, every new enterprise that we pursue leaves us wiser as farmers and far more familiar with this particular plot of land. The familiarity part in particular becomes more and more valuable as we look ahead to next season.
We have so much in the works for next season. It's honestly wildly overwhelming and incredibly exciting to think about all of the future prospects we have for land management and retail outlets! We have been toying with the idea of renting booth space at the Jamestown Farmer's Market for the 2022 season, which has been steadily gaining popularity as one of the areas finest markets. The alternative to that plan would be to offer a once weekly or twice monthly delivery route to the Chautauqua Lake region. The delivery model is our answer to the ever-growing popularity of grocery home delivery, which lots of folks have sort of come to expect as an option for food acquisition. For those of you interested in our farm products (think pastured chicken, pastured pork, pastured eggs, market bouquets), we would love to hear what your thoughts are in regards to these proposed methods of farm product retail! Do you enjoy the Saturday morning routine of heading out to the farmer's market, or would it be far more convenient to pre-order your meat/eggs/flowers and have them delivered to your door for a small delivery fee? We would love to hear from you!
In any case, we are still out here hustling and laying some serious groundwork for seasons to come. Keep an eye on our social media outlets to hear about an upcoming chicken delivery day! We just processed our last batch of pastured meat chickens yesterday and plan to offer a one-day delivery option for you all to stock up on whole roasting birds for the winter. More details on that coming later today or tomorrow. As always, thank you so much for believing in us and believing in this crazy dream of ours. It is such a privilege for us to be able to provide you all with top-notch food.
All the best,
